The Art of Time Suckage*
I think everyone can identify with the concept of “time suckage”, a term I prefer to procrastination simply because it makes me feel I’m more honest with myself…
During our university days, especially before major exams, a friend of mine and I used to list to each other all the things we’d be doing rather than studying… Lists included stuff such as grouting tiles, reupholstering couches, replacing car batteries, etc.
These days my acts of time suckage is much more “mundane” and are usually (but not exclusively) limited to reading, watching TV/movies, cleaning, baking, and similar activities. However, my dear and talented friend Daria has introduced me to another way to “waste” hours and hours of my time that can actually be refreshing… It’s creating Treasury lists on Etsy and I’ve fallen for it hook, line and sinker (not that it takes a lot to hook me)!
If you don’t know about Etsy, you should really check it out – I love it! You can use this website to buy or sell anything you can think of and connect to the community of artisans and creative people from all over the world. The site offers several ways for people to search for things to buy and one of them are Treasury lists, i.e. themed galleries of member-curated items. I find that creating a treasury list a very cool way to spend a rainy winter afternoon, even if it may be taking the art of time suckage to a whole new level… At least, I can pretend I’m doing something quasi-creative with my brain cells
Tell me that this kind of thing doesn’t brighten a rainy day?
*Time suckage, in my case at least, is taken from the movie “Reality Bites” – “I have to work around here, and unfortunately Troy, you are a master at the art of time suckage”.
